Lessons from Africa

As this adventure comes to a close, I just wanted to write down some lessons I've learned on this trip.

1) Always Believe!

In two games, the US had goals called back (and the calls were certainly questionable).  While only one game outcome was affected, a player must always believe you can recover from calls like those.  The US/Slovenia game ended in a tie which hurt their chances of advancing from their group.  With some luck, they made it to the Round of 16.

Hey Dad,

Here's some more for the blog.

Games...  So far I've been to two games.  One was at Ellis Park and the other was at Soccer City.

I had the opportunity to go to Ellis Park to watch the US play Slovenia.  I think I briefly mentioned that one before.  For those that have seen the movie Invictus, that is the park that the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final was played.  On the plane ride over, I watched that movie.  Throughout the movie, you saw how Rugby, a simple game, united the country.  While many things have changed since the Apartheid, many things remain the same.  I was talking to this girl and she said that there was someone who was released from prison a while ago for his involvement with the Apartheid.  This man was murdered back in January or February close to the England practice facility.  She said that it was a huge deal and many were worried about further actions.  She said that this World Cup came at a good time because soccer is doing in 2010 what Rugby did in 1995.  Soccer, while it is only a game and not the most important thing in life, has the power to defeat racism and unite a country.

Thank you to everyone who attended this years Arsenal Community Games. With your support we we able to raise almost $2000.00 that will help to provide donations to worthy charities in our community.
There were over 150 Arsenal kids at the 3 v 3 tournament and all the kids had a great time. The U17 v U18 scrimmage was an exciting preview to the main event. The "Coaches Match" was more then everyone bargained for and all spectators went away satisfied having watch a very competitive game. Congratulations to all of the coaches who managed to put on an excellent show for all! Let's hope there was enough ice available for you guys post-match. Get ready for a possible rematch at the upcoming Arsenal Opening Ceremonies in the fall of 2010! Check out some pictures from the match below.
